Soong Ching-ling: Realizing the Dream of Joining the CPC in Her Later Years

宋庆龄1915年与孙中山在日本东京完婚，支持孙中山革命事业，曾当选为国民党第二至六届中央执行委员、武汉国民政府委员。

Soong Ching-ling married Sun Yat-sen in Tokyo, Japan in 1915 and supported Sun Yat-sen’s revolutionary cause. She was elected as the executive committee member of second to sixth Central Committee of Kuomintang (KMT) and a committee member of National Government of Wuhan.

宋庆龄伟大光辉的一生中，曾有过三次入党经历。1950年3月，宋庆龄第一次给中共中央写信，表达了多年向往加入共产党的心情。中共中央在收到宋庆龄的信后，暂未作明确答复。1952年10月，宋庆龄直接给毛泽东写信，毛泽东甚为感动，他对宋庆龄真诚地表示：“你要求加入中国共产党，对中国共产党是一个光荣。因为你在政治上是完全够格的。在革命战争的时期，实际上你已经是我党优秀的领导者之一。今后还有许多工作需要你，有些事情我们党内的同志做不好，你做却很合适……所以还是留在党外好。”1957年4月，宋庆龄向当时正在上海的刘少奇当面提出加入中国共产党的要求。刘少奇回京后向毛泽东和中央政治局作了汇报，讨论研究后更倾向于宋继续留在党外，以便其为党工作。

In Soong Ching-ling’s great and glorious life, she had three experiences of joining the Communist Party of China (CPC). In March 1950, Soong Ching-ling wrote to the CPC Central Committee for the first time, expressing that she had been eager to join the CPC for many years. After receiving her letter, the CPC Central Committee had not yet given her a clear reply. In October 1952, Soong Ching-ling wrote directly to Mao Zedong. Mao Zedong was deeply moved. He sincerely wrote back to Soong Ching-ling, “It is an honor for the CPC that you ask to join the Party, because you are completely politically qualified. During the revolutionary war, you were already one of the outstanding leaders of the CPC. There will still be a lot of work for you in the future, because there are some things that our comrades within the Party are unable to do well, but you can. ... So it’s better for you to work outside the Party.” In April 1957, Soong Ching-ling expressed her desire of joining the CPC to Liu Shaoqi who was in Shanghai face to face. When Liu Shaoqi returned to Beijing, he reported to Mao Zedong and the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee. After discussion, they thought that it was better for her to maintain the status quo so that she could work better for CPC.

1981年春，88岁高龄的宋庆龄身患重病。当被问到是否还有入党想法时，在病榻上已无法说话的宋庆龄连连点头。为此，中央政治局召开紧急会议，讨论通过接收宋庆龄为中国共产党正式党员，并发出《关于接收宋庆龄同志为中国共产党正式党员的决定》。

In the spring of 1981, 88-year-old Soong Ching-ling was seriously ill. When asked if she had any thoughts about joining the CPC, Soong Ching-ling, who was already unable to speak because of serious illness, nodded repeatedly. To this end, the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee held an emergency meeting to discuss and approve the acceptance of Soong Ching-ling as an official member of the CPC, and issued the “Decision on Accepting Comrade Soong Ching-ling as an Official Member of the Communist Party of China”.
